Purpose of Job
Provide specialist input to enable safe and responsible execution of operations to reduce harm in the workspace environment. Assist in the implementation and management of occupational safety programme in line with One Sasol SHE Excellence and Sasol SHE framework and risk-based approach
Key Accountabilities
- Implement Sasol Group’s risk philosophy and enterprise risk management framework;
- Evaluate safety policies, standards, and procedures. Suggest amendments and updates based on best practices to achieve objectives;
- Give input on shutdown, Maintenance and Production plans from a safety aspect. Recommend suspension of activities posing threat to workers’ safety;
- Share expertise on inspection plans and coordinate the identification and resolving of workplace hazards;
- Facilitate the identification of safety hazards, risks, key undesirable events and implement the associated Group controls and business specific preventive and corrective controls in accordance with the SHE risk-based approach;
- Facilitate Occupational Safety learnings discussions and ensure adherence to improvement agreed actions/controls thereof;
- Coach and contribute to the implementation of rollout plans of safety improvements and on other occupational safety measures, for Sasol employees and Service Providers;
- Participate in BBS observations, support barrier identification, be present in barrier removal meetings and drive the closure of identified barriers in area of responsibility;
- Manage leading and lagging indicators as well as performing trends analysis and implementation of initiatives;
- Track service provider performance (indicators and trends), and drive SHE-related non-conformance application, implementation and close-out with regards to service provider management;
- Pinpoint critical areas that impact occupational safety and manage the Safety non-conformance process including incident investigation, near misses, root-cause analysis and identification of corrective actions;
- Participate in audits on service providers to check compliance with SHE file requirements;
- Implement safety audits on systems (e.g. logbook audits, lockout audits, legal appointment audits, and insurance engineer’s audits) for Sasol and Service Providers;
- Actively participating in legal compliance audits or authority inspections to verify SHE legal compliance;
- Identify and analyse scenarios that affect safety levels in the department and recommend critical controls to mitigate risks;
- Report progress on implementation of SHE game plan. Communicate recommendations to enhance the risk-assessment framework;
- Provide input on the selection of specific equipment for personal protection and conduct training to demonstrate their use. Facilitate the availability, allocation, and utilisation of resources;
- Raise awareness of personnel on safety practices as part of the company’s safety programme to minimise harm;
- Apply evidence-based SHE practices in alignment with set standards for safe operations;
- Build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders to enhance occupational safety in the workplace;
- Guide, mentor and lead team members or Service Providers;
- Continuously improve own skills and knowledge. Complete, implement, and track personal development plan to attain personal performance goals.
Formal Education
University Bachelors Degree in Engineering
