Best practices and innovations in fruits and vegetables value chains: Call for nominations
Call for nominations SUBMIT NOW
Deadline: 27 April 2026
Fruits and vegetables play crucial roles in food security, nutrition and livelihoods worldwide. They provide essential nutrients, sustain millions of small-scale producers and contribute to more sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is preparing a global report, tentatively titled “Unlocking the full potential of fruits and vegetables globally” to highlight the roles of fruits and vegetables in transforming agrifood systems globally and to promote validated transformative actions.
The report will:
- Feature selected case studies of replicable and scalable practical approaches and innovative solutions.
- Synthetize key trends, best practices and innovations that address challenges across the value chains of fruits and vegetables – from production and processing to trade and consumption.
- Provide evidence-based recommendations.
Call for case studies
FAO invites submissions of replicable and adaptable case studies on best practices and innovations with demonstrated impacts or strong potential across the value chains of fruits and vegetables.
Case studies may address agronomic, biological, nutritional, socioeconomic, or environmental aspects of the value chains of fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables, as outlined by the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables 2021 (IYFV 2021), include edible parts of plants — such as leaves, stems, roots, flowers, buds and fruits — whether cultivated or harvested wild, and consumed raw or minimally processed.
Please note that for the purposes of this study, the value chains of the following are excluded: starchy roots and tubers (e.g. cassava, potato), dry grain legumes, cereals unless harvested immature, nuts and seeds, medicinal plants, stimulants (coffee, cacao and tea for example), and processed or ultra-processed products.
Selection process and timeline
Eligible nominees
Submissions are open to organizations and entities working at national, regional or international levels, including research and academic institutions; government agencies; the private sector; non-profit organizations; farmers’ organizations; and civil society.
Nominations may describe either proven practices with measurable impacts or innovations with strong potential, even if their impacts have not yet been demonstrated.
Submission
Case studies should be submitted through the online form. The form collects information on the practice or innovation, its impact, key stakeholders and beneficiaries, and its potential for adaptation and replication in other contexts.
Submissions will be accepted until 27 April 2026. Late or incomplete nominations will not be considered. For more information, please contact Fruits-and-Vegetables-Report@fao.org.
Review and selection
An evaluation panel composed of international experts nominated by FAO will evaluate the submissions based on the following criteria:
- Impact and practical application: demonstrated results and effectiveness in the field.
- Innovation and originality: novelty and uniqueness of the proposed approach and potential impact.
- Inclusivity and social impact: contribution to gender equality, youth engagement, and indigenous community involvement.
- Scalability and replicability: potential for adoption and implementation in diverse contexts and regions.
