This position is subject to a range of vetting checks, including criminal records check and/or disclosure to ensure program participants are safeguarded. About This Role The Child Protection in Emergencies Assistant will provide field-level technical support to Local Partners (primarily WATANA and EHALE in Nampula) implementing Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response activities under the Contingency Humanitarian Program Document – Multi-Hazard Response in Mozambique. Based in Nampula with frequent travel to partner locations and project communities, the Assistant will work closely with Local Partner staff to strengthen their capacity through on-the-job coaching, joint field visits, and hands-on technical guidance. Working under the supervision of the Child Protection in Emergencies Officer, the Assistant will support quality implementation, documentation, and monitoring of Local Partner activities, particularly in Nampula province which hosts large numbers of internally displaced persons from Cabo Delgado. Primary Responsibilities Technical Support to Local Partners

  • Provide regular field-level technical support and on-the-job coaching to Local Partner staff (WATANA, EHALE) on CPiE, MHPSS, and GBV prevention and response activities.
  • Support Local Partner staff in delivering community-based MHPSS activities, including Psychological First Aid (PFA) and structured group psychosocial support sessions.
  • Accompany Local Partner staff during field activities to provide real-time technical guidance and feedback.
  • Assist Local Partners in facilitating child-friendly and adolescent-friendly psychosocial activities in temporary learning spaces, child-friendly spaces, and displacement sites.
  • Support Local Partners in conducting community outreach and awareness-raising sessions on child protection, GBV prevention, positive coping strategies, and available services.
  • Guide Local Partner staff on safe identification and referral of children at risk and GBV survivors using established referral pathways.

Case Management Support to Local Partners

  • Support Local Partner staff in the identification, registration, and documentation of unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) using harmonized tools and data protection protocols.
  • Provide hands-on guidance to Local Partner case workers in conducting Best Interest Assessments and developing individual care plans.
  • Assist Local Partners in maintaining quality case management processes, including intake, assessment, care planning, follow-up, and case closure.
  • Support Local Partners in family tracing and reunification efforts and follow-up on children placed in temporary family-based alternative care.
  • Conduct regular joint case file reviews with Local Partner staff, providing constructive feedback and coaching for improvement.

Field Operations Support

  • Support Local Partners in the deployment and operation of Mobile Child Protection and MHPSS Teams in climate-affected, hard-to-reach, and displacement-affected communities.
  • Assist Local Partners in conducting rapid protection and MHPSS needs assessments following climate shocks and displacement events.
  • Support Local Partners in utilizing standardized CPiE, MHPSS, and GBV tools, IEC materials, and referral directories.
  • Guide Local Partners in ensuring inclusive service delivery, with particular attention to children with disabilities, girls, and other marginalized groups.

Community Structures and Coordination Support

  • Support Local Partners in mobilizing and strengthening Community-Based Child Protection Committees (CBCPCs) and community volunteers.
  • Assist Local Partners in establishing linkages between community-based child protection mechanisms and formal child protection systems.
  • Support Local Partners in building relationships with local service providers and government stakeholders (Social Action Services, health facilities, schools).
  • Assist Local Partners in operationalizing Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) mechanisms and Complaints and Feedback Response Mechanisms (CFRM).
  • Represent ChildFund at district-level coordination meetings as delegated by the Child Protection in Emergencies Officer.

Documentation and Reporting Support

  • Support Local Partners in accurate and timely data collection on CPiE, MHPSS, and GBV activities, disaggregated by sex, age, and disability.
  • Assist Local Partners in maintaining quality attendance registers, activity reports, and session documentation.
  • Review Local Partner documentation and reports, providing feedback to improve quality and completeness.
  • Support Local Partners in documenting case studies, success stories, and lessons learned.
  • Compile field visit reports and share observations and recommendations with the Child Protection in Emergencies Officer.

Safeguarding

  • Uphold ChildFund’s Child Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Support Local Partners in understanding and implementing safeguarding and PSEA standards in their day-to-day activities.
  • Monitor Local Partner compliance with safeguarding standards during field visits and flag concerns to the Officer.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns or incidents immediately to the Child Protection in Emergencies Officer in accordance with organizational policies.

Required Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Child Development, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of professional experience in child protection, social work, or community-based programming, preferably in emergency or humanitarian contexts.
  • Experience providing technical support, coaching, or mentorship to community-based organizations or local partners.
  • Experience in psychosocial support, case management, or working with vulnerable children and families.
  • Familiarity with child protection referral systems, GBV prevention and response, and community mobilization approaches.
  • Knowledge of Child Protection Minimum Standards (CPMS), Psychological First Aid (PFA), and survivor-centred approaches is an advantage.
  • At least 3 years of motorcycle riding experience with a valid riding permit.

Required Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build supportive relationships with Local Partner staff.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and coaching in a respectful and empowering manner.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Portuguese; proficiency in English is an advantage.
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Office, data collection tools).
  • Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining regular communication with supervisor.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing emergency contexts.
  • Commitment to child rights, gender equality, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to Local Partner locations and remote, hard-to-reach communities.
