What you’ll do

Role purpose: It plays a critical role in supporting the organization’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) function by identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks faced by the institution. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that effective risk management practices are implemented, regulatory compliance is upheld, and a strong risk culture is fostered across the organization. By conducting comprehensive risk assessments, developing risk mitigation strategies, and monitoring risk controls, the Risk Officer contributes to the overall stability, resilience, and sustainable growth of the financial institution.

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of an effective enterprise risk management framework in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify, evaluate, and quantify potential risks faced by the institution.
  • Collaborate with various business units and departments to assess risk exposures, develop risk mitigation strategies, and monitor risk controls.
  • Stay updated on relevant regulatory guidelines and industry trends to ensure compliance and proactively address emerging risks.
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of risk policies, procedures, and guidelines across the organization.

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

  • Proven experience in risk management, preferably within the financial services industry, with a solid understanding of various risk types and mitigation strategies.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and guidelines related to risk management in Mozambique.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex risks and develop practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and a high level of integrity in handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Monitor and report on key risk indicators (KRIs) to senior management and the board of directors, highlighting areas of concern and recommending risk mitigation actions.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and assessments of risk management processes and controls, recommending enhancements as necessary.
  • Assist in the preparation of risk reports, presentations, and dashboards for senior management, board committees, and regulatory authorities.
  • Provide training and awareness programs to employees on risk management principles, policies, and practices.

Must have technical / professional qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., FRM, PRM, CRM) are a plus.
  • A minimum of 4 year relevant experience in an audit or risk function, or in auditing or consulting firm dealing with risk related topics.

  • Risk Assessment Quality.
  • Risk Mitigation Effectiveness.
  • Key Risk Indicator (KRI) Monitoring: Track and report on the performance of KRIs, highlighting trends, changes, and potential areas of concern to senior management and the board.
  • Risk Reporting Accuracy and Timeliness.
  • Risk Culture and Awareness.
  • Process Improvement.
