Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority responsible for setting the global environmental agenda and promoting the implementation of sustainable development within the UN system.

The Climate Change Division leads UNEP’s work on climate change, focusing on strategic guidance and high-impact action for climate stability, mitigation, and adaptation. The Division works closely with Member States and partners to support a just transition through capacity building, access to finance and technology, data, and resilience efforts.

This position is located in the Climate Change Division, within the Adaptation and Resilience Branch, under the Climate Change Mitigation Unit, based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Programme Management Officer will report directly to the UN-REDD Asia and the Pacific Regional Coordinator, under the overall supervision of the Head of the Climate Change Mitigation Unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the UN-REDD “Riau Initiative” project in Indonesia.
  • Monitor project progress, analyze performance, review reports, identify problems and propose solutions.
  • Initiate policy development through research, trend analysis, and evaluations.
  • Support meetings and conferences: prepare agendas, identify participants, and develop background documents and presentations.
  • Coordinate activities related to budgeting, reporting, and financial documentation.
  • Prepare written outputs such as reports, studies, and publications.
  • Conduct outreach activities, including training workshops and presentations.
  • Lead or participate in complex field missions, including providing guidance to consultants and stakeholders.
  • Collect and analyze data using visual tools to support decision-making and reporting.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

  • Professionalism: In-depth knowledge of climate change in developing countries and UNFCCC. Strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
  • Teamwork: Collaborative, receptive to feedback, prioritizes team goals over personal interests.
  • Planning and Organizing: Sets clear goals, anticipates risks, uses time efficiently, adapts plans when necessary.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in forest policy, forest management, natural resource management, international development, environmental economics, or related field.
  • A first-level degree with two (2) additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • Training in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.

Assessment Process

Qualified candidates may undergo a written assessment followed by a competency-based interview.
