BACKGROUND

Peace Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that specialises in conservation at scale through the development of transfrontier conservation areas and the long-term management of key protected areas in partnership with government conservation agencies and communities within these landscapes. We currently focus on the development of five priority transboundary landscapes measuring over 65 million hectares throughout southern Africa and the co-management of ten national parks and protected areas covering over 5.2 million hectares.

JOB PURPOSE

The role is primarily focused on ensuring the technical support services of workshop and infrastructure are effectively performed, both from a planned proactive and a reactive perspective. Work functions will include management of the workshop, vehicle services, repairs & maintenance, fuel control, infrastructure repair and maintenance and new construction and related periphery activities thereto including project management, planning, procurement, personnel management, motivation and development, health and safety, procurement and budgetary management.

The role will be pivotal in the provision of operational excellence and will be focused on building relationships with service providers and contractors as well as contractual arrangements and KPIs.

The role will be required to deliver on each year’s work plan through developing and leading a technical team in a high performing environment. Ensure seamless teamwork to make sure that all service, repair, maintenance, fuel control and other duties are conducted within timescales and to customer expectations, maintain operational excellence and always adhere to safety standards to ensure full compliance to legislation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key performance areas

  • Workshop Management: Overall responsibility of the workshop area including proactive planned and reactive repairs and maintenance of the park fleet; ensuring suitable spares and consumable stocks are maintained; ensuring effective procurement of all spares, tools and consumables; managing daily planning and operations of the workshop; leading and motivating the workshop and service staff to always ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Infrastructure Management: Oversee infrastructure department including proactive planned and reactive maintenance and repair of all facilities (buildings, tourism facilities, water and electrical services, roads etc) and overseeing the internal or external contractor construction of new infrastructure facilities.
  • Tourism Management:Maintaining and improving standards for cleanliness and maintenance at all tourism sites; ensuring suitable stock management and creating systems to manage consumables; providing advice on improvement to infrastructure and tourism products.
  • Fuel Management: Manage fuel stock and control the delivery and dispensing of fuel. Act on deviations to fuel records and mitigate fuel theft.
  • Operations Management:Support the efficient functioning of logistics within the Park.
  • Performance:Identify, produce, and develop internal performance measures, budgets, results, operational targets, and measures to ensure that the best service is offered to the departments with the maximum business results.
  • Development:Identifying, producing and developing internal systems to continually improve the technical knowledge and ability of the park through employee development and training as well as exploring and procurement of technology, equipment, and materials to improve efficiency.
  • Compliance: Managing, leading, and ensuring that the workshop remains fully compliant with all relevant standards as well as health and safety, regulation, and guidance. Equally ensuring that all equipment and tools are maintained, calibrated, and evaluated in line with industry requirements.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support, oversight and implementation of procurement processes in relation to the key performance areas, including vehicle maintenance and infrastructure works.
  • Assist and support park management with reporting, investigation and remedial action, complaints and failures and implementing systems to record, report and monitor.
  • Produce, review, and maintain systems within the park to promote compliance and efficiency as well as support the business to improve and increase efficiency and to maintain systems for data analysis and the production and presentation of such information.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience and track record in project management, development and getting the best out of teams through effective management.
  • Track record in vehicle maintenance, fuel control and workshop management with a background in successfully leading a technical team.
  • Track record in management and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Ideally have a demonstrable passion for wildlife and conservation.
  • Ideally have experience in the management and development of conservation areas.
  • Ideally supported with formal qualifications, in project and or operations management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety requirements for the areas of responsibility.
  • Understanding and proven ability regarding budgeting, cost management and procurement procedures and have a strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to take ownership and provide leadership for the areas of responsibility with the confidence to discuss, advise and address matters.
  • Excellent communication skills in English with a strong preference to candidates with Portuguese and Shangana language skills.
  • Ability to live and work in a remote location.
