About the role

We’re seeking a Marine Program Coordinator – an experienced, hands-on marine scientist who can blend scientific rigour with strong leadership and cultural awareness. You’ll coordinate and deliver field research programs, mentor students and staff, and ensure operational excellence across multiple conservation projects. This role suits someone who thrives in dynamic, remote environments, enjoys mentoring others, and is passionate about turning marine science into tangible conservation results.

  • Program Coordination & Delivery Planning; including research projects and providing scientific and technical support to the Expedition Leader specialist programs
  • Training & Mentorship; including lectures, workshops, and practical field training
  • Data Management & Research Integrity; maintaining robust data-management systems and quality assurance, contribute to publications, reports, and impact assessments
  • Community & Public Engagement; representing LTO at public talks and with stakeholder meetings and site visits.
  • Operational & Administrative Support; including monthly financial reconciliations and donor/grant/impact reports, equipment, health-and-safety documentation and audits (Mozambique and South Africa sites), social media content creation, fundraising, and development of new projects.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Essential Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Marine Science or a related subject area.
  • PADI Rescue Diver (or higher) with a minimum of 50 logged dives, including experience in scientific diving and proven dive-safety awareness.
  • Full, valid driver’s licence (manual transmission).
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • High proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Field-research experience in tropical or coastal marine ecosystems, including data collection and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate small-to-medium field teams or academic programs.
  • Strong organisational skills – able to manage logistics, reporting deadlines, and dataset systems simultaneously.
  • Confident communicator and public speaker, capable of teaching and presenting to varied audiences.
  • Physically able to meet the demands of fieldwork in a remote coastal environment.

Desirable

  • Portuguese language skills or willingness to learn basic conversational Portuguese for community interaction and team cohesion.
  • Prior experience working in the Global South, tropical regions, or remote research stations.
  • Experience designing and delivering marine projects.
  • Familiarity with financial tracking or grant-reporting.
  • Demonstrated initiative and independent problem-solving in field settings.
