Are you an accomplished executive with extensive experience in large-scale power infrastructure recovery? NES Fircroft is seeking a Project Director to lead the complex recovery and successful completion of a 450MW Power Plant in Mozambique.
This is a critical, site-based role requiring exceptional leadership to re-establish credibility, stabilize execution under a Cost-Plus Contract, and manage high-stakes commercial, technical, and geopolitical risks. The role is a 30-36 month Fixed Term Contract.
The Project Director will be the lead executive overseeing all elements of construction, political, social, and economic risk. The primary goal is Project Recovery & Execution following a suspension in April 2025.
As the Project Director, some of your key responsibilities will be:
Project Recovery: Implement robust recovery planning, including schedule re-baselining, claims negotiation, and stabilizing execution under a Cost-Plus contracting model.
Strategic & Team Leadership: Provide clear
strategic direction, rebuild trust and alignment across all stakeholders (EPC, Lenders, Government), and appoint/lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team on-site.
Commercial & Financial Oversight: Lead commercial and risk mitigation strategies, provide comprehensive oversight of the EPC Contract and Funding Agreements, and ensure diligent financial stewardship (audits, reporting, cost control).
Engineering & Technical Governance: Oversee auditing and validation of design/construction, manage technical risks (obsolescence, integration gaps), and oversee re-commissioning and grid integration.
ESG & Stakeholder Management: Ensure compliance with updated environmental legislation and international standards (IFC, Equator Principles), lead proactive community engagement, and act as the primary interface with government agencies, financiers, and the Project Steering Committee.
To excel in this Project Director role, you should possess a degree in Engineering or Project Management, and an MBA or equivalent is an advantage. Previous Africa or emerging market experience is strongly preferred. You should also possess a deep blend of technical, commercial, and executive leadership expertise, specifically:
15+ years in large-scale power/energy infrastructure, with 7+ years in executive leadership roles.
Proven track record in successfully leading stalled, delayed, or Force Majeure-impacted projects through recovery, focusing on equipment obsolescence, ESIA changes, and community risk mitigation.
Knowledge of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology, including Gas Turbines, HRSGs, and Steam turbines, with the ability to assess and correct engineering/design inconsistencies.
Strong experience with EPC/FIDIC contracts, claims negotiation, dispute resolution, and managing financial oversight in complex projects.
Demonstrated capability in navigating updated environmental regulations, community/resettlement issues, and lender-driven ESG requirements (e.g., air emissions, water use compliance).
This role requires a leader with the gravitas to rebuild confidence and drive a complex, high-value asset to successful completion, fostering a culture of transparency and safety-first execution. If it is of interest, please do not hesitate to apply – we would love to hear from you.
