Purpose of Job:

The Process Safety Manager (PSM) plays a key role in ensuring the safe, predictable, reliable, and sustainable operation of all assets in Southern Mozambique. Based in Temane, this position is responsible for leading the process safety management program within Sasol. Key responsibilities include overseeing risk management and hazard assessment activities, driving best practices, assessing competency and training needs, and advancing process safety culture and operational discipline. The PSM Manager ensures the implementation and maintenance of the Process Safety Management (PSM) System and provides assurance that all process safety risks are managed at tolerable levels. This role requires collaboration with Asset Operations, SHE Well Delivery, Well Testing, Services, Integrity, and Asset Integrity teams, as well as providing SME input into key capital projects.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Process Safety Governance:
    • Ensure implementation and maintenance of process safety governance and processes.
    • Contribute to the establishment and review of site PSM-related systems and procedures.
  2. Risk Assessment & Hazard Studies:
    • Oversee hazard identification and risk assessment studies (e.g., ISD, HAZID, HAZOP, PHR, LOPA, QRA).
    • Provide quality assurance on risk studies conducted by Process Safety Specialists.
    • Communicate findings and recommendations from PHA reports to assist operations management.
  3. Land Use & Emergency Response:
    • Provide land use and spatial planning advice based on QRA, building, and facility studies.
    • Oversee site emergency response and preparedness programs, liaising with external stakeholders.
    • Assist in developing scenario-specific emergency response plans.
  4. Audits & Compliance:
    • Conduct 1st and 2nd party PSM assurance audits during drilling and well intervention campaigns.
    • Assist operations in preparing for 3rd party/external audits and insurance engineers’ visits.
    • Ensure compliance with Sasol Group PSM Element procedures and the 5th HSI focus area.
  5. Reporting & Performance Improvement:
    • Oversee the gathering and processing of monthly PSM KPI data.
    • Develop monthly PSM performance reports for the SHE Senior Manager and VP SHE.
    • Advise management on improving process safety performance and developing site-specific game plans.
  6. Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Represent Sasol’s PSM interests at the Sasol PSM Steering Committee and Group PSM technical workgroups.
    • Collaborate with the Southern Mozambique Operational Support team to prioritize key initiatives.

Formal Education:

  • University Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering: Chemical or Mechanical.
