Role Overview

The Energy Expert (Consultant) will design and deliver research and TPM services for energy and renewable energy projects (e.g., mini-grids, utility/C&I solar PV, wind, hydro, storage, energy efficiency, clean cooking) across different countries and clients—providing rigorous technical verification, performance analysis, and actionable insights.

Key Roles & Duties

  • Lead TPM assignments end-to-end: inception design, indicator frameworks, sampling, tool development (KoBo/ODK), QA/QC, field verification, and reporting.
  • Conduct technical due diligence & performance reviews of energy systems (generation, availability/uptime, losses, reliability indices, PUE uptake, CO₂e avoided).
  • Verify KPIs and compliance with relevant standards, grid/interconnection codes, E&S/HSE safeguards, and donor requirements.
  • Analyze metering/SCADA/EMS data, triangulate with site inspections, document reviews, and stakeholder interviews.
  • Produce concise reports, briefs, and dashboards translating technical findings into practical recommendations for donors and implementers.
  • Coordinate with multinational field teams and local partners, ensuring ethical practices, data protection, and do-no-harm in challenging contexts.

Qualifications (Experience & Education)

  • Experience: Proven track record in energy/renewables delivering TPM/M&E or research for donor-funded programs in multiple countries.
  • Technical depth: System design & performance analysis, M&V approaches (e.g., IPMVP), data analytics (Excel/Power BI/R or similar).
  • Standards & donors: Familiarity with IEC/IEEE, ISO 50001, and frameworks used by World Bank/IFC, USAID, FCDO, EU, UN, etc.
  • Assets: Exposure to mini-grids, C&I solar, storage, smart meters, clean cooking; additional languages beyond English.
  • Education: Bachelor’s in Electrical/Power/Energy Engineering (or closely related field) required; Master’s preferred.
